New Girlfriend

Because our relationship is becoming quite serious I think it is a good time to introduce you to my new girlfriend. Her name is CX-1, she comes from the good family Colnago and this is how she looks.



More seriously. Have been riding my new Colnage CX-1 carbon bike for about 4 months now and still enjoying every minute of it! Incredible comfort, stifness and speed. It give me an extra boost of eagerness to get on the bike. There are a few reasons why I choose Colnago:



1. My old bike (now known as "The Mule") was a Colnage and I rode that bike for 6 yeare fully satisfied wihtout any problems. Of course I did not yet know carbon would make such a big difference.
2. I like the geometry of Colnago bikes. Cannot explain that scientifically, but I do. I like the straight fork and the fact that is not a sloping frame
3. I think a race bike should be Italian :-)



Reading up on the first test results of the new line of bikes Colnage the result of my choice was then this CX-1. It is a modular monoque carbon frame which is Colnago's first with a (semi-)integrated headseat.

As said the bike is very stiff but in the mean time incredibly comfortable. It just eats every little bump or hole in the road. The size of the bracket shows where the stiffness comes from.



Very important for that are of course the wheels. Probably the most difficult choice to be made for me. Finally I was advised to go for the Mavic Ksyrium Premium SL. Although not with a high rim (which looks cool), but good quality vs price and they fill nice and stiff.



To top it off I choose for the new Shimano Dura-Ace group. You can't go wrong with that (also there my expierence with 6 years on Ultegra without any problems helped a lot), it shifts like butter and it just looks great, doesn't it?

RAID IMPERIAL COMPIEGNE 28 juin 2009

Pour cette édition du RIC 2009 nous étions 8 au départ ; Les Romains 1 et 2, Fabrice, Patrick, Jacky, Pascal, Serge et David. Arrivés sur place à 8h, partis en vélo à 8h30 pour le 55 kms.

Le temps était beau, chaud, parfait pour le vélo. Le parcours a commencé par du roulant, assez plat, presque sans dénivelé. Le premier ravito est apparu vers 13 kms, donc pas d’arrêt pour nous. Un peu plus loin, l’entrée en forêt était entamée et en sous-bois le sol était humide et gras. Pas énormément de boue, mais les pierres et racines étaient glissantes avec l’abondante humidité.

Les montées et descentes sont finalement arrivées offrant quelques challenges mais rien d’insurmontable. Ces portions-là en forêt de Compiègne étaient très jolies et bien différent de nos terres autours de Senlis (moins de sable, par exemple).

Ce qui était notable lors de cette édition 2009 c'est le nombre de participants, le tracé des parcours et les accidents. Il y avait tellement de monde (sur le 55 km en tout cas) qu’à plusieurs reprises nous nous sommes retrouvés arrêtés en plein forêt en raison d’un trop grand nombre de cyclistes sur les chemins. De véritables bouchons…du jamais vu. Dès la moindre descente, montée ou arbre posé en travers il y avait un bouchon !

Ensuite, personnellement, j’ai trouvé que le parcours du 55 km était relativement mal dessiné…environ 60% en forêt et en chemin quelconque et 40% sur route ! On a même dû traverser un parking de voitures ! Selon moi, ce tracé était moins bien que l’année 2008.

Enfin, les accidents. Rien que sur le 55 km nous avons croisé 2 cyclistes ayant lourdement chutés, allongés au sol avec des personnes prodiguant les premiers soins…Si le premier me semblait simplement très, très mal empoint, le 2eme était inconscient et immobile. Pas joli à voir du tout. Le pire, c’était la 3eme victime qui recevait un massage cardiaque de l’équipe des pompiers en plein chemin de terre. C’était assez choquant à voir, et plus tard il se disait que la personne ne s’en soit pas sortie…

Quant à nous, pas d’ennuis de cet ordre mais de petits désagréments ; Jacky était freiné par des crampes, Romain 1 a dû changer sa chambre à air 2 fois et a cassé sa chaîne, Romain 2 a emprunté le parcours des 75 km par mégarde et a fini avec 76 kms au compteur. David a eu un problème de fourche qui va nécessiter l’immobilisation du vélo pour un retour SAV. Pour les autres, RAS. Serge et Pascal avaient décidé aussi de faire le 75 km, mais eux l’ont fait exprès… !


Fabrice et David arrivés les premiers (ils ont donc, gagné !) et le magnifique pique-nique préparé par nos chères épouses nous attendait autour d’une table à l’arrivé. Bonne randonnée donc, à refaire en 2010.

ENFIN IL EST ARRIVE!

C'est un MBK RD800 alu carbone, en raison d'un budget limité, j'ai privilégié le groupe Campagnolo Centaur et les roues Vento.

1er sortie ce matin, 20kms bonnes sensations, différentes du VTT!

La Trace de la Harde

L'équipe était presque au complet à 8h30, puisque Fred et Harry étaient partis une heure plus tôt pour le 85Kms, Bruno Stefano et Gilles bien plus tard .... mais pas de Survilliers !

Bref, nous nous sommes lancés sur 65Kms ou le terrain successivement cassant, gras ou sablonneux a favorisé chutes et crampes.

David à cours de forme, bifurquait sur le 45Kms. Patrick, encore à la peine suite à un "soleil" était tout heureux de se voir rejoint par Jacky et Ernesto qui en s'égarant rajoutaient 2Kms au compteur. Le manque de concentration de nos trois compères leur économisera la boucle des étangs de Commelle et réservera aux suivants une belle interrogation.....

En effet, quelle ne sera pas la surprise de Fabrice voyant, au ravitaillement de Thiers, Ernesto déjà en train de siroter une menthe à l'eau !!! Oui, oui le spectre du Raid Picard persistait ... Emmanuel et Romain (2) restaient tout aussi incrédules .

Finalement, tous repartiront pour les neufs derniers kilomètres sur un rythme ponctué par les contractures musculaires et souffles courts.

A l'arrivée, point de Romain(1) qui a cette fois encore "performé". Il parait qu'il s'est arrêté à Compiègne ? Espérons qu'il aura réussi à rejoindre son père ;-)

Nous retrouverons finalement à l'ultime ravitaillement Chipo/Merguez nos amis Harry (always on top) et Fred (85-10)

Bref, le récit d'une sortie bien sympathique qui laissera cette semaine quelques traces dans les mollets.

Nb: Puisque les 65Kms (en réalité 70) n'auront été couverts que partiellement par l'équipée de la
"Table de Mongresin" il manque donc une partie de la Trace GPS.

Dimanche 07 juin 2009

Beaucoup de sable et un temps frais pour cette matinée en Ermenonville.
44 Kms alternant single tracks, descentes techniques et chemins sablonneux.
Bref, tous les ingrédients pour une sortie sympa toutefois ponctuée par quelques chutes dont un spectaculaire soleil en pleine rocaille qui aurait pu occasionner des plaies et bosses bien plus importantes que celles qui meurtriront certainement les prochains jours du revenant Ernesto !
Un peu de mécanique sur les plaquettes avant d'Emmanuel ;
David avait troqué son GIANT pour tester le vélo de Dorian (empêché par le concert senlisien de la veille).
Les deux Romain, tout de LAPIERRE vêtus, se lamenteront quelques temps de notre allure "dominicale".
Jacky, toujours en délicatesse avec la transmission de son VTT (rappel des techniciens DECATHLON: pas de sable, pas de boue, pas d'effort inutile, bref toute sollicitation qui pourrait générer un retour en atelier).
Bruno, s'il te plaît, graisse ta selle.... le grincement est insupportable à nos oreilles sensibles !!!

Pour la TRACE de la HARDE de SURVILLIERS rendez vous est pris, pour ceux qui ne s'y rendront pas directement, au point de rendez vous habituel à 7h45. Soyez ponctuels ;-)

NB: Le tracé de notre sortie ayant du mal a être chargé sera mis en ligne dès que possible.

Sortie VTT du 1er juin

Nous n'étions que deux ce matin au départ VTT.
Après une énième tentative de réglage du guide de chaîne, toujours aussi infructueuse, nous sommes donc partis avec Romain2 pour le Pagnotte et retour par Raray.
Nous n'avons malheureusement pu atteindre notre objectif en cela empêchés par une crevaison lente (Patrick) et un changement de chambre à air (le kit de dépannage aérosol ayant été inefficace) rendu nécessaire par une chute en terrain boueux pour Romain2

Bref, un repli stratégique s'imposait pour ne pas risquer de rentrer à pied. Au total 28 Kms... c'est déjà çà !

Wilier Cento1 - aka One O Ooonnnneeeessssss

A couple of weeks ago Harry and I went down to Italy for some shopping.

We left Senlis at 6:00am and ou friend Francesco Scardaoni (Oooones) of team Felt picked us up at the Bologna airport and drove us to Terni.

When we arrived at Ruota Libera (store photo) my favourite bike store, I simply stated a budget and the requirement that the bike be Italian.

Francesco, Roberto and "the Wizard" consulted among each other briefly and quickly came to a concensus:

A 2009 Wilier Cento1 with Campagnolo Chorus 11S, Ritchey WCS 

componentry and Ursus Gallardo wheels was what I needed.  Fitting all this in my budget was possible thanks to Roberto's always friendly pricing and Euro700 from the Italian government as part of an incentive to promote biking as an alternative to cars.

Roberto asked to be left alone to "create" the new beast.  He gave us a set 

of road bikes and told us to go and get lost ... which we did.  Francesco lead Harry and I on beautiful 75km bike ride in the middle of the Appenine mountains.  Despite my dismal performance I really enjoyed the ride!

The Wilier Cento1 is the evolution of the Wilier Cento which is Wilier's flagship bike.

The first thing to say about it is that it looks great.  The marriage of geometry and livery strikes a perfect balance.  The bike demands attention without being too flashy.  How about them white wheels!

The second thing to say about this bike is that it rides like the wind!  The Cento1 has incredible 

stiffness when pedaling and yet each imperfection on the road is absorbed sooooo smoothly you can barely feel it.

How did Wilier achieve such a balance?

Material and Geometry.

Material: the Cento1 is made of 46Ton Carbon Fiber.  This 

means that the fiber has a strength of 

46Tons/mm2!!  That means that you could stack about 50 Peugeot 206 on top a piece of carbon fiber the size of the lead of pencil!

The only other bike to match this spec is the Pinnarello FP7.  The Pinnarello Prince FP outspecs all bikes with a 50Ton/mm2 fiber.

As far as geometry

goes the stiffness comes from two main areas: the bottom bracket and the headset.  As you can see from the pics the bottom bracket is absolutely massive and the bearings are integrated in the frame for a reduction in weight and a gain in stiffness.

Looking from the top you can really see how the

 frame really bulges out to make a housing for the pressed in cups.

The other source of stiffness is the headset area.  Here you can really notice the massive structure that supports the fork.  

Curiously enough the section is square at the bottom and round at the top.

Form and function chase each other all over the frame resulting in 

creative shapes such as the intersection of the tubes below the seat and the assymetric rear bottom tubes.  Notice how the drop out is carbon as well (scary!)

Rule #3 of the Universal Biking Manual:

YOUR BIKE CANNOT HAVE ENOUGH ITALIAN FLAGS ON IT.

Speaking of Italian, the bike is equipped with Campagnolo Chours 11s.  The 50/34 combination will be great this August in the Rocky Mountains, but for l'Oise the 34 is too small and so it will soon be replaced by a 38.

On the other hand, nothing but praises for the 11s cassette and deraileur.  The extra speed delivers fast, smooth changes and you can always find exactly the ratio you are looking for.  Also gotta love the "clang" on the upshift!

In conclusion the only thing that I can say is that I simply can't get enough of this view!!
